Young Love

Jimmy flipped the rains, guiding the wagon to a grassy area overlooking the Wannahumpa River. "We are still a couple of hours from the cottage. We should rest and water the horse before doing the last leg."

Emily nodded. "As ye say, Jimmy." She smiled. "Ye found a fine spot, and I wouldn't mind stretching me legs a tad. I may not be pulling a wagon, but me arse is still feeling a might bruised by the bumps and such."

The young man laughed. Now that the cook was talking, he found her wit as charming as the rest of her.

She was right about the gorgeous surroundings. The stream was as beautiful as its namesake. A slow, meandering creek that seemed in no hurry to leave the wildflowers and giant trees that encircled the lake. He watched as a trout that must have weighed four pounds rose to nip at an unlucky insect floating on the current. He'd have to remember this spot. Emily could probably do wonders with freshly caught fish.

Emily…. The stableman glanced at the diminutive cook, having an almost uncontrollable urge to sweep her into his arms.

The day had been wonderful. It was a four-hour trip to the nearest town. He'd worried that it might be awkward riding with the young woman. She'd shown glimmers of personality but had been reserved and shy around him. That seemed gone now. He found her delightfully funny, her observations about everything from food to the differences between Irish and American politics making him laugh more than he had in years. She also looked him straight in the eyes, her penetrating green orbs seeming to truly see him.

Jimmy had always found the tiny woman pretty. She might not have Amelia's curves, but there was no denying she had a woman's form. Still, as the day progressed, his feelings transformed. Talking and laughing with Emily had changed her from someone he admired from afar to someone he… desired. Unlike his mutual attraction with Cecily, or his lustful fantasies of Amelia, the cook was real, and he could feel himself falling just a bit in love with her.

Going out was faster as the wagon was empty, but coming home heavily laden meant they would need all four hours of travel. A stableman's son, Jimmy knew the horse would need at least a half hour before they could start again.

He went to the side of the wagon and held up his hands to the small woman, helping her from the wagon. As his large hands all but encircled her tiny waist, the young man's brain flashed to his dream from a few nights ago, and he felt a stirring inside.

He slowly lowered Emily to the ground, her body sliding along his. Looking down into the depths of gorgeous green eyes, he was lost. Finally, she smiled, saying, "Um… Jimmy, we should probably water the horse and such."

The stableman blinked. "Oh, yeah, of course!" He reluctantly let her waist go and moved to collect a bucket and grain bag, doing his best to shake himself mentally.
